In 1987 land owned by the Duchy of Cornwall was earmarked for development by the local authority. The then Prince Charles took a keen interest from the start and indeed wrote a book “Vision of Britain – a personal view of Architecture.” The Duchy of Cornwall, eager to promote the prince’s ideas chose to lead the planning itself rather than sell the land to an established builder. Construction started in 1993 and is nearing completion.

Matthew Roberts
Matthew is a PhD candidate at the University of Cambridge and member of the Ax:son Johnson Centre for the Study of Classical Architecture. He teaches history at the London School of Architecture and hosts 'Deconstructed', a monthly podcast for Open City, the charity that runs the Open House Festival, for whom he also runs an annual tour of Poundbury. His writing about architecture, culture and politics have appeared in a number of publications including The New Statesman, Tribune Magazine and The Critic.
