Sussex Stationers Bookshops

A non identical pair with No. 128.

Ground floor, symmetrical white painted timber shop front under medium deep white painted fascia and placed asymmetrically on façade with ‘classical’ feature single door to upper floors on right hand side with ‘Doric’ columns and mini ‘classical’ lintel/entablature over; door has deep red painted canopy. Double doors to shop front in centre of single pane display windows and set back from rear of pavement with plain moulded pilasters each side. Display windows set on medium low simply moulded white painted stall risers. Fascia has raised non-illuminated lettering ‘SUSSEX STATIONERS’ in centre over ‘BOOKSHOPS’.

First and second floors, similar in treatment in red brick with blue headers and red brick quoins and dressings to windows. Flat arches over windows brick with centre stucco keystones and brick band/string course over first floor windows, all painted over ?red brick. Windows set symmetrically on façade, all sash, first floor having centre six pane with four pane windows each side and second floor nine pane and all white painted timber.

Roof, red/brown plain tiles pitched, hipped to left and ridge continuous with No. 128 to right. Black painted dentilled timber eaves cornice and black gutter.

An attractive building on modest scale similar to adjacent properties, spoilt by over deep fascia and asbestos or similar flue projecting from wall at first floor lintel level over right hand door. The removal of this together with more modest fascia, white painted eaves/gutter and paint removed from indicated brickwork would improve the buildings appearance which otherwise appears in reasonable condition.
