History:

Facing the Butter Market into Market Square, No. 83 was known as Dubds Castle around 1750, later part bank, part dwelling, part shop and printing press, the latter facing the High Street. Early building on three storeys in brick with part ground floor stuccoed, deeply cut and painted to simulate stonework and fitted with round headed double hung sash windows. Upper windows tall and rectangular. The roof tiled and hipped.

Description:

Jacobean style building on two storeys with two window façade south facing Market Square and one window façade east facing to High Street and second floor in mansard roof space.

Ground/first floors, red rustic semi-faced brick walls, two storey height windows with square panes in lead casements, moulded stone mullions and transoms, quoin style surrounds. Single modern glazed door in centre of Market Square façade with moulded stone jambs and head and Doric style based pilasters with bases, frieze, cornice and broken curved pediment with stone carved ‘Lloyds’ shield in centre. Dressed Portland stone dado and parapet with moulded coping and decorative corbels. Two pressed steel rainwater downpipes and decorated hoppers at each end of High Street elevation.

Roof, hipped plain clay tiles and ridges to main roof and dormers, two facing Market Square, one facing High Street, each with square pane lead casements and tiled cheeks.

Comment:

A pleasant building of high quality and in good repair – the photograph, perhaps not doing it justice. The stonework to the main entrance door and the rainwater hoppers for example are extremely well detailed.
