History:

A tavern believed on site in 1603 and a tile hung public house in 1860 but rebuilt in 1887 to enable Bank street to be widened. Grade III, locally listed.

Public House – Dorset Arms.

Description:

On two floors with a third in the roof, the lower floors stucco painted with radius corners to Dorset Street and The Shambles. Elevation to road divided into three panels by flat stucco pilasters carried up to cornice and parapet at second floor level. Centre panel has double entrance doors with side lights under moulded arched head and small pedimented key stone and capitals to pilasters at each side; decorative glazed panel over doors. Single long casement windows on each side with moulded flat head over and stone cill. First floor has single long sash windows to each panel each with moulded flat head and raised panel under windows. Small moulded string course at first floor level. Cornice capped in concrete/stone on moulded projecting cornice with capitals to pilasters.

Hipped slate roof capped with lead flashing around centre flat with two sash windows set behind parapet in dormers with slated cheeks, curved timber heads and felted roofs at second floor level.

Tall rendered square chimneys, two over north elevations, LHS, single over south elevation.

Rendered finish returns on north and south elevations, the former having single door with narrow long window over on first floor and south elevation having single door centrally placed with single narrow long windows on each side and two single long sash windows on first floor over door and window on RHS.

Comment:

The building needs to be regularly maintained but when well looked after and recently repainted with restrained brewery logos, etc. it is an attractive older town public house and a pleasant element in the street scene when in good repair.
